Patients enter outpatient facilities during the day, are treated and cared for by a physician or specialist, and leave the structure after care is given. There are no overnight stays in these facilities. They can range from simple physicians’ offices that provide primary care, to large, independent hospitals without beds. Extended care, also referred to as aftercare, is an extremely important component of an outpatient facility.
